Wall memorial, N. wall of Wilcote chapel - to Sir William Lenthall - d 1596.
(Left side, facing) To the sacred memory of William LENTHALL Esq who married Frances one of ye daughters of Richard SOUTHWELL and had issue by her four sone and four daughters and buried in God's [- - - - - - ] and died [- - - ] ye [- - - -] day of septer anno 1596 being aged 44 years. (Right side, facing) and erected in a pious remembrance of him at ye charge of the said Frances as a continuing monument of her true affections anno dni 162[-].
[Kneeling figures of Sir William and his wife, both wearing black garments with a white ruffle, she with a head cap. They are kneeling either side of a prayer desk hands in prayer resting on a book. The desk is draped with a green cloth with gold fringe. The figures are set in an alcove with marble walls. Behind the figures are two arched tablets in black marble bearing the inscription in incised Roman caps painted gold. Between the inscription panels is a coat of arms. On the roof of the alcove are two winged cherub heads, the one above Frances is badly damaged. Beneath the kneeling figures on a shelf are four daughters in black robes with hands clasped. The heads are missing. Where the sons once were is now blank. The alcove is flanked by two obelisks, at the base of each a gilded lion's head. Either side of the shelf are two small plinths fronted with a recessed black marble panel. Below the shelf and at the base of each plinth a pendant finial of a bunch of grapes and vine leaves. Surmounting the alcove is a shield bearing the coat of arms and topped by four winged cherubs between the arms of a cross. Above them is an open urn with flame. . Note -- Sir William's second son William was speaker in the House of Commons on 4 January 1642, when King Charles I entered the House of Commons to seize five 'disruptive' members; Lenthall behaved with great prudence and dignity. -- Heraldry -- Within alcove - Per pale:-Dexter: Sable six lozenges in bend Argent. Sinister: Argent three cinquefoils Gules embellished Or. On shield - Quarterly of 6.-- 1. Sable, six lozenges in bend Argent, a crescent Argent for difference. -- 2. Or on a Bend Gules cotised Sable three Mullets of the field. Pierced Gules. -- 3. Argent a Bend Gules cotised Sable between six Billets of the third. -- 4. Argent a Saltire engrailed Gules between four Martlets Sable. -- 5. Argent two Bars Azure, on a canton Gules a cinquefoil Or -- 6. Argent a Chevron Sable between three Greyhounds of the second collared Gules]
