Inscription E48 Index Plan < Prev. Next >

Mantel top chest tomb with 6 inscribed side panels. There are two inscribed panels on each of the south and north sides and one panel on each of the east and west sides. The panels have on either side full height narrow arched designs. At the top corners of the panel is a design of three pears. At the bottom corners there is a design resembling a four petal poppy. There are traces of black paint on parts of the design, and some of the lettering retains black paint. The top of the tomb has a shallow coping, and on each corner of the top there is a triangular stone "lug", having a design of a three lobed fruit on the two outer sides. In a photograph from the mid 1900s, this tomb is surrounded by railings, which were presumably removed in the 1940s. There are two inscriptions on the south side. The left hand one is:

Sacred
to the memory of
James LORD
who departed this life
June 7 1848
In the 70th year of his age
[ Boast not thyself of tomorrow
for thou knowest not what a day may
bring forth
Prov. xxvii. i ]

The south side right hand one is:

Also
in memory of
Mary widow of
James LORD
who departed this life
June 10 1858
aged 81 years

The inscription on the east side is partly lost due to the stone having crumbled. The quotation is from Psalm 116, verse 5 "Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful" :

In memory o[f]
Maria wife [of]
[Ric]hard HE[-----]
and daughter
[of] [J]am[es]
[an]d Mary [LORD?]
Who died Oct 2 [1859?]
aged 45 years
[-----] the Lord and [----]
yea our God is merciful
Psalm [-]xvi 5

There are two inscriptions on the north side. The left hand one is:

In memory of
Robert LORD
who died April 6 186[8]
aged [5]9 years
Also of Sarah Ann
Daughter of Robert
and Ann LORD
who died Aug 13 1866,
aged 20 years

The north side right hand one is:

To the memory of
Ann wife of
Robert LORD
who died May 9th 1850
aged 42 years
Also of Emily Jane
their daughter
who died Sep 16th 1852
aged 15 years

The inscription on the west side is:

In memory of
Jane wife of
John LORD
Who died March [14] 1842
Aged 30 years
[Also of ]
Charles James
their son
who died Dec 10 1856
aged [23] years
