Chest tomb - mantel top. Grade II Listed. "SP3813 21/165 Chest tomb approx. 4m SE of SE corner of nave of Church of St. Mary. Late C17. Limestone. Hollow-moulded plinth and cornice. Small moulded inscription panel to south side. Commemorates Martha Bennett, d.1698". The inscription panel on the south side carries a very faint inscription:

Here lieth ye body
of [Thom--] [M--- ]
[ who died D------]
[ye]2 17[-]1 Aged
[2]9 y[ears]

The east side inscription is to Martha Bennett and is still just legible:

[Here was buried ye ] body
[of] Martha the [wife] of
[Robert] [BENNET] who
deceased the 26 of
[Febru]ary in the year
1698

[BR (South side): "1721 4 Dec MASON Thomas". It has not been possible to establish any connection between the MASON and the BENNETT inscriptions. -- ALSO -- BR (East side): "1698 1 Mar BENNETT Martha widow" Note that this is actually 1699. There are no other North Leigh records for this person or her husband, although there is a Robert (d. 1622) and Ursula (d. 1633) who may have been in the previous generation. ]
