Inscription H61 Index Plan < Prev. Next >

Headstone, oval top, with checked and scotia shoulders. Similar to H60, which stands beside it. It is decorated at top by swirls of drapery. These continue down the sides and across the bottom to form a shield shaped inscription panel. The decoration and stone are very weathered and almost all traces of an inscription have disappeared. The style of the stone suggests an early 18th century date.

[ Inscription almost entirely illegible, but at the bottom left, where the age or date would be, the numeral "6" is just visible, followed possibly with an "8"]

[This may be a stone to one of the COMPTON, JOHNSON or CLAPTON families of North Leigh. Perhaps to - "1768 23 Oct JOHNSON Frances dtr of John & Anne" ]
